Reddit MCP server and API for AI agents

Let Claude Code, Cursor or any MCP client read Reddit. Add one hosted server and your agent can pull feeds, threads and search results as JSON. Nothing to install, and failed calls are free.

Add the Reddit MCP server

The server is hosted at https://api.apixstar.com/mcp and speaks Streamable HTTP. Create an API key, then add the server to your client.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http apixstar https://api.apixstar.com/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"

Run once in your terminal. Replace YOUR_API_KEY with a key from the console.

Cursor and other clients

ToolWhat it doesCost
reddit_feedPosts from a subreddit or a user, sorted by new, hot, top, rising or controversial$0.0007 per 10 posts
reddit_readA post with up to 200 comments, a single comment, or a user profile$0.0007
reddit_searchKeyword search across Reddit or inside one subreddit$0.0007 per 10 results

A tool call goes through the same metering as a REST request. If it fails, the tool returns the error and nothing is charged.

Or use the command line tool

apixstar init # sign in, detect your agents, install the skills
apixstar feed r/LocalLLaMA --sort new --limit 10 --json
apixstar search "vector database" --community LocalLLaMA --json
apixstar read posts/1abc2de --json

apixstar init signs you in with Google, finds Claude Code, Codex and Cursor on your machine, installs the skills and checks the connection. It is safe to run again.

Three things your agent can do

Feed

List a community's or a user's posts, sorted by new, hot, top, rising or controversial.

Read

Open a post with its comments, a single comment, or a user profile.

Search

Search all of Reddit or one community by keyword and get matching posts back.

Why agents need a purpose-built Reddit tool

Reddit blocks most direct fetches

A generic web fetch from an agent is often refused. The API returns the content as structured JSON instead.

Keys stay out of the context window

The tool owns the credential. Nothing sensitive is pasted into a prompt or echoed into a transcript.

Predictable cost per step

Failed calls are free and each response reports its exact charge, so an agent loop cannot run up a surprising bill on retries.

Building your own agent instead? Call the REST endpoints directly. The API reference and llms.txt describe every path in a form a model can read.

Agent questions

Which agents are supported?

Any client that supports remote MCP servers over HTTP, including Claude Code and Cursor. The command line installer also sets up skills for Claude Code, Codex and Cursor.

Does the agent see my API key?

With MCP the key lives in your client configuration and is sent as a header, so it is not part of the conversation. With the command line tool the key is stored in a file only your user account can read, and the agent just runs commands.

Is there a Reddit MCP server?

Yes. Apixstar runs a remote MCP server at /mcp using the Streamable HTTP transport. It has three tools: reddit_feed, reddit_read and reddit_search. You authenticate with your API key in the Authorization header.

Do I have to install anything for MCP?

No. The server is hosted, so there is no package to install or process to keep running. You add its URL to your MCP client once.

Can I use it in CI or with an unattended agent?

Yes. Set the APIXSTAR_API_KEY environment variable, or log in beforehand, so nothing waits for a browser.

How do I control what an agent spends?

Each tool call costs $0.0007, or that much per 10 results for feeds and searches, and failed calls are free. Give the agent its own API key, watch it on the usage page, and revoke the key at any time.
