A PRAW alternative for reading Reddit at volume
PRAW is a Python library for Reddit's official API. Apixstar is a hosted API you call over HTTP. They solve different problems, and plenty of projects use both. This page shows where each fits and how the code changes.

A library and a service are different things
| PRAW | Apixstar | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Open-source Python client for the official API | Hosted REST API, any language |
| Cost | Free library. Official API terms apply | $0.0007 per request, or per 10 results of a listing |
| Credentials | Reddit app client ID and secret | One API key |
| Speed | 100 queries per minute, sleeps at the limit | Up to 30 requests per second |
| Full comment tree | Extra calls through replace_more | Up to 200 comments in the one request |
| Posting and moderation | Yes | No |
The same three tasks, both ways
Newest posts in a subreddit
# PRAW
reddit = praw.Reddit(client_id=ID, client_secret=SECRET, user_agent=UA)
posts = list(reddit.subreddit("python").new(limit=100))
# Apixstar
posts = requests.get(f"{BASE}/reddit/v1/r/python/new",
params={"limit": 100}, headers=AUTH).json()["data"]["posts"]
A thread with its comments
# PRAW
submission = reddit.submission(id="1abc2de")
submission.comments.replace_more(limit=None) # one extra call per "load more"
comments = submission.comments.list()
# Apixstar
thread = requests.get(f"{BASE}/reddit/v1/posts/1abc2de",
params={"commentLimit": 200}, headers=AUTH).json()["data"]
Search inside a subreddit
# PRAW
hits = reddit.subreddit("python").search("asyncio", sort="new", time_filter="week")
# Apixstar
hits = requests.get(f"{BASE}/reddit/v1/r/python/search",
params={"q": "asyncio", "sort": "new", "timeRange": "week"},
headers=AUTH).json()["data"]
In these snippets BASE is https://api.apixstar.com and AUTH is {"Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"}. PRAW returns lazy Python objects. Apixstar returns plain JSON.
Keep PRAW for these
Anything that acts as a user: submitting, replying, voting, moderating, reading an inbox or a private feed. Also small non-commercial scripts that fit comfortably inside the free limits. Use Apixstar for the read-heavy part where you are waiting on the rate limiter, or where you would rather not manage Reddit credentials.
PRAW questions
Is PRAW still worth using?
Yes, when you need to act as a Reddit user: posting, replying, moderating or reading your own inbox. PRAW is a well-maintained client for the official API and handles its rate limits for you.
Is Apixstar a PRAW replacement?
Only for reading public data. It is an HTTP API, so there is no library to install, but it cannot post, vote or log in as a user.
Why is PRAW slow for large jobs?
PRAW follows the official limit of 100 queries per minute and sleeps when you reach it. Fetching comment trees with replace_more makes extra calls for each "load more" stub, which uses that budget quickly.
Do I need Reddit credentials?
For PRAW, yes: a client ID and secret from a registered app. For Apixstar, no: one API key from the console.
Can I keep my PRAW code structure?
Mostly. Replace the PRAW calls that read listings, threads and search with HTTP requests, and keep the rest. A thread read costs $0.0007, and a listing costs $0.0007 per 10 posts.
